WHAT WE DO
We understand our clients need a combination of engineering, technology, architecture, design and management expertise to bring their projects across the finish line. At CHA, we bring all of these areas together to find the right solution for every challenge.
WHY WE DO IT
The best design projects are accomplished sustainably — before, during and long after construction. Because our planet is changing, we partner with our clients to help us all change with it. Our experts think and work differently to find a better way to shape our shared home.
Supporting local communities is key to our culture. Our employees dedicate their time and skills to nonprofit organizations across the country, and we make sure they have paid time off to volunteer wherever their interests take them.
In 1952, CHA’s founder, John Clarkeson, establishes Clarkeson Engineering Co. to begin work on interstate roadways from Boston. The firm moved to Albany, NY, in 1955 and is still based in New York’s capital city today. In 1957, the firm completed a major section of I-90, setting the stage for its transportation work well into the 1960s.
In 1961 and 1967, Clarkeson Engineering Co.’s designs of I-95 and the Adirondack Northway, respectively, are both honored as one of America’s Most Scenic Highways by Parade Magazine. With big plans for the future, the firm decides to diversify into municipal engineering and planning, and renames to Clarkeson & Clough Associates in 1967.
In 1971, Clarkeson & Clough Associates rebrands as Clough Associates. After 25 years of business, the firm’s transportation practice is thriving. With civil engineering projects in New England and the Middle Atlantic, Clough Associates diversifies further into industrial engineering and landscape architecture.
In 1981, Clough Associates renames to Clough, Harbour & Associates (CHA). In 1985, CHA tops the Capital District Business Review's list of "20 Largest Area Engineering Firms." The firm’s expertise covers civil and environmental, electrical and mechanical, structural, geotechnical and survey teams. In 1988, the firm opens its first regional office in Hartford, Connecticut.
By 1991, CHA employs nearly 200 people and the firm ranks #213 on Engineering News-Record’s list of Top 500 design firms. CHA steadily grows throughout the 1990s, opening multiple offices across the northeast and expanding to regions such as Keene, Rochester, Buffalo and Philadelphia. With a 30% annual growth rate, CHA employs 400 people by 1996.
2002 marks CHA’s 50th anniversary. That April, Engineering News-Record (ENR) Magazine ranks CHA as the 117th largest design firm in the United States. By 2009, CHA climbs to 83rd place on that list, and ranks 12th amongst firms serving the manufacturing sector. By the end of the decade, CHA operates 25 offices in fourteen states.
This decade includes acquisitions in Alabama, Indiana and Georgia, in addition to an architecture firm and two firms specializing in project and construction management. CHA also develops a set of guiding principles highlighting their commitment to improve the communities where we live and work — most notably, the aspiration to responsibly improve the world we live in. With a total of nine successful acquisitions over ten years and the largest backlog in the company’s history, CHA entered 2020 poised for continued growth and success.
2020 tested all of our professional, social and personal lives. With a new CEO, CHA quickly and remarkably adapted to deliver essential services to our clients and protect our team. The start of this decade also ushered in a strong presence in Florida with three more key acquisitions. In 2022, CHA celebrated 70 years of design excellence. Seven decades of partnering with our clients, taking on their challenges as our own and delivering high-quality, sustainable project deliverables.
