Champeaux Road Bridge Replacement Receives ACEC CT Merit Award

CHA Consulting, Inc. (CHA) is proud to announce that the Champeaux Road Bridge Replacement project has earned a Merit Award in the 2025 ACEC Connecticut Engineering Excellence Awards. This recognition follows the project’s recent Bronze Award win at the 2025 ACEC Massachusetts Engineering Excellence Awards, further highlighting CHA’s innovative engineering solutions and dedication to delivering infrastructure that enhances safety, sustainability, and community well-being.

The Champeaux Road Bridge over Long Pond in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, was originally constructed in 1938 and required a complete replacement due to structural deficiencies. CHA’s updated design transformed the aging three-span structure into a single-span precast NEXT beam integral abutment bridge, supported by micropiles. This innovative approach reduced material requirements, increased cost efficiency, and eliminated joints, minimizing long-term maintenance needs.

CHA worked closely with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), updating the design to meet their requirements and developing a structural monitoring plan at their request. The plan, which tracks the bridge’s performance, will inform future design standards and support research on cost-effective and minimally invasive bridge construction techniques. The new bridge enhances flood resilience, improves safety, and minimizes environmental impact.

The ACEC Connecticut Engineering Excellence Awards honor projects that exemplify ingenuity and technical excellence. CHA will join other honorees at the Annual Dinner on January 27, 2025, at the Aqua Turf Club, where the contributions of firms like CHA will be celebrated.
