The upgraded Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Foxboro Commuter Rail Station has officially reopened following a major accessibility and capacity improvement project. State and local leaders, including Governor Maura Healey and MBTA General Manager Phil Eng, joined project partners to mark the milestone at a ribbon-cutting ceremony earlier this month.
Completed in approximately one year, this project is being recognized as the fastest permanent station construction effort in MBTA history. The improvements come ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, when Gillette Stadium near Boston is set to host seven matches and draw tens of thousands of visitors to the region.
CHA served as the Owner’s Project Manager and provided critical support to help advance the station upgrades, which significantly enhance the passenger experience and operational efficiency. The project includes a new 800-foot high-level platform on the stadium side of the tracks and a 600-foot high-level platform on the opposite side. Together, these upgrades allow for simultaneous boarding and unloading of trains, improving crowd management during major events.
The fully accessible station is expected to accommodate up to 20,000 rail passengers per World Cup match, providing a more seamless and inclusive travel experience for fans and daily riders alike.
Beyond the World Cup crowds, the improvements strengthen long-term access to Gillette Stadium and Patriot Place while supporting broader investments in public transportation, accessibility, and regional mobility across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
