I-87 Exit 6 Single Point Urban Interchange Project Wins Award

CHA is pleased to announce that the Interstate 87 Exit 6 Bridge Reconstruction Project has been named "Project of the Year" by the Upstate New York Chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE).

The origins of this project date back to 1990, when a review of the bridge’s inspection report indicated that the bridge needed to be replaced. The bridge carries Routes 2 and 7 over Interstate 87 in Latham, New York.

CHA led the consultant team retained by the New York State Department of Transportation to provide final design services for this project. The design was completed and contract plans were produced under an eight-month accelerated schedule.

The design included the following:

• A new Single-Point Urban Interchange (SPUI), which was the first freeway-under SPUI constructed in New York State
• Auxiliary lanes on I-87 between Exit 5 and Exit 6
• Full pedestrian accommodations through the interchange and over-roadway corridor including a mid-block pedestrian activated crossing on Rt. 7
• An interconnected traffic signal system with adjacent intersections on Rt. 7/Rt. 2 that also included “force-off” queue detectors on freeway ramps and on Rt. 7
• Access management features along Rt. 7/Rt. 2 that conformed with the Town of Colonie’s NY 7 / NY 2 Corridor Transportation and Land Use Study

The new structure was completed in 2010 and has been applauded extensively by the travelling public.
