I-85/I-385 Design-Build Interchange

The I-85/I-385 interchange is the most complex interchange in South Carolina with three-levels to accommodate 200,000 vehicles per day. This interchange was also considered the most dangerous, which prompted SCDOT to seek a redesign. Our team accepted the challenge to re-engineer the proposed interchange as a design-build project after re-evaluating a proposed design prepared by other firms. We reapplied for permits with revised EA, prepared an IMR and interchange modification report, redesigned the interchange within a record time of 13 months, delivered revised plans to acquire the right of way and utility agreements, and obtained approval on final plans for construction.

Design and construction were extremely complex due to the scope of the interchange and the need to maintain traffic flow on all sections of the interchange throughout construction. The result is a more efficient and safter travel experience on these vital transportation routes.
