The existing Springvale District Court was described as “the dreariest and most decrepit of the state’s 31 district courthouses.” CHA’s site selection process evaluated 27 parcels of land, but city business owners wanted the courthouse to stay in the village center. When the Nasson College campus became available, city planners seized the opportunity to locate civic buildings on this attractive site.
The new courthouse site is on the edge of the campus, with frontage on Main Street. It is adjacent to the newly expanded public library, and ample parking is available in the redesigned campus lots behind it. The building’s corner entrance maintains a civic presence on the street, anchoring renewed downtown development.
The building’s site, on Springvale’s main street among several historic buildings, influenced the design and materials chosen. The patinated copper siding echoes copper accents on several nearby buildings, including a handsome church steeple. The siding is a 100% recyclable product that deepens in color as it ages.
New construction of 23,000 square feet.
