After nearly 70 years, the Barkley Regional Airport (PAH) was in need of an upgrade and began planning for a new $42 million airport terminal to better support future economic growth opportunities in Western Kentucky.
As part of the new terminal development at Barkley Regional Airport, CHA was engaged to create a comprehensive landscape master plan that included campus-wide landscape strategies, terminal frontage design, signage, and wayfinding. A key component of this effort was the design of a Departures Plaza, an inviting outdoor space intended to offer seating, rest areas, and a welcoming first impression for travelers arriving at the new terminal. The plaza needed to integrate multiple functional elements, including a screening wall, landscape features, seating, and entrance signage, while accommodating pedestrian movement from two separate parking lots.
CHA’s design solution delivered a cohesive and context-sensitive plaza that seamlessly incorporated these elements by using materials that echoed the architectural language of the terminal. With more robust travel options and a design allowing for future expansion, the possibilities are endless.
The new 25,000-square-foot terminal allows for future expansion.
The site encompasses roughly 75 acres.
