Captain Jonathan H. Harwood Research Center Renovation

The Captain Jonathan H. Harwood Research Center enhances the Department of Veterans Affairs’ ability to improve veterans' health outcomes by providing a modern, flexible environment for advancing long-term health services research. This renovation of 21,902 SF of existing space and a 6,387 SF addition created a purpose-built setting for research, administrative functions, and support services.

CHA provided architecture, interior design, and multidisciplinary coordination, guiding the project from planning through construction. The team balanced modernization with the constraints of the existing structure, delivering a cohesive design that meets VA standards. Designed with flexibility in mind, the facility accommodates evolving research needs through adaptable planning strategies.

A network of collaboration areas encourages informal interaction among researchers while allowing for future conversion into dedicated workspaces. Daylighting was a key driver in the design, shaping the building layout to enhance occupant comfort, support productivity, and create a more engaging interior environment. Site improvements further enhance usability and performance, including resurfaced parking areas, new green spaces, drainage upgrades, improved access, and enhanced physical security measures.

This flexible, daylight-driven research facility creates a welcoming, efficient environment that supports staff and visitors while strengthening the VA’s ability to deliver high-quality care.
