Himsel Army Airfield and the Atterbury-Muscatatuck Training Center are critical aviation and training assets for the Army National Guard at Camp Atterbury in Edinburgh, Indiana. To maintain safe, reliable operations and address aging infrastructure and compliance issues, targeted upgrades were advanced to rehabilitate deteriorated runway pavement and reconfigure an existing helipad.
CHA served as the lead design firm and Designer of Record (DOR), providing Type A, B, and C services to develop design and administrative documents for a future contract to remove and replace two concrete portions of Himsel Army Airfield’s active takeoff and landing surface. CHA’s sustainable design solution provided for pavement that would be structurally sufficient for mission traffic and have an estimated life of 20 years.
Work included removal and replacement of existing reinforced concrete slabs, subsurface remediation and compaction, and detailed pavement design addressing reinforcement, doweling, jointing, and curing. Airfield striping and runway marking upgrades further enhance operational clarity and safety.
CHA also developed design solutions to reconfigure the Building 1 helipad, resolving obstructions and addressing areas of non-compliance. Together, these improvements deliver resilient, compliant infrastructure that sustains readiness and supports long-term training and operational needs.
Removed and replaced two concrete portions of active takeoff and landing surface.
Engineered rigid pavement system delivers an estimated 20-year service life.
Concrete mix meets flexural and compressive strength requirements for C-130 aircraft.
